The Fox and the Drum

From Yoshitsune Senbon Zakura — one of the three great kabuki plays

This story follows the original kabuki narrative, retold for new audiences. Characters and events remain true to the source. In the original play, the fox disguises itself as a real retainer named Sato Tadanobu — a detail beloved by kabuki fans.

Scene One

Yoshitsune and the Drum

Minamoto no Yoshitsune was the most celebrated warrior in Japan — the man who had destroyed the Taira clan and brought peace to a country at war.

In gratitude, the retired emperor Go-Shirakawa presented him with a treasure: a small hourglass drum called Hatsune no Tsuzumi — the First-Sound Drum.

Its skin had been stretched from the hide of a rare white fox. When struck, the sound was like nothing else in the world.

Scene Two

The Banquet and the Shadow

In the warmth of candlelight, laughter, and sake, Yoshitsune would sometimes take out the drum and play.

The sound drifted through the open veranda and into the night.

No one noticed the small white shape at the edge of the darkness — perfectly still, face turned toward the sound. When the drum was struck, the shape trembled.

Scene Three

What the Fox Knew

The sound was like his father's voice.
Like his mother's voice.

The drum — the one the warrior carried — its skin had been made from the hides of his parents.

Every time it was struck, he could hear them.

That was why he was here. Only for that.

Scene Four

One Who Wept

Before long, a man appeared among Yoshitsune's attendants. He was diligent. He was loyal. No one questioned him.

But at every banquet, when the drum was played and the others laughed and raised their cups — this man alone would go still. Eyes closed. Tears running silently down his face.

No one noticed. No one but one.

Scene Five

A Quiet Concern

That woman had been watching — night after night, banquet after banquet.

Then one evening she came to Yoshitsune and spoke quietly. "There is something strange. That attendant — every time the drum is played, he weeps. While everyone else celebrates. Alone, and in silence."

She said nothing more. She did not need to.

Scene Six

The Question

Yoshitsune stood before the attendant in the darkness.

"Why do you weep?"

The man said nothing.

Yoshitsune was still. Then, quietly, he asked again.

"What are you?"

Scene Seven

The Truth

The shape of the man began to waver. White ears appeared. Then one tail, then another, unfolding slowly from the darkness.

The fox knelt before Yoshitsune and spoke.

About the drum. About his father and mother, whose hides had been used to make it. About how, every time it was struck, he could hear their voices.

He had stayed only for that sound. Nothing more. Nothing else.

Scene Nine

The Gift

Yoshitsune held out the drum.

The voices of your parents live inside this drum. They always have.

"This drum belongs to you."

Scene Ten

The Dance

The fox revealed its true form and danced.

Beneath the full moon, nine tails sweeping through the night air, cherry blossoms falling.

As it danced, the fox wept.

THE END

What Remained

The fox disappeared.

The drum lay alone on the cold stones. Cherry blossoms settled around it in the silence.

For a while, the sound of the drum lingered in the night.
